Getting your tape on? Physiotherapist Emma Lee has the low down:
Pink, blue, green, brown – taping these days seems to be the new fashion accessory!
We generally use strapping tape for two main reasons:
1. To support and limit movement in a joint or body part
2. To encourage better movement by turning certain muscles on or off.
Taping can be hugely effective if done for the right reasons and in the right way, however slapping tape anywhere and everywhere isn’t going to help anyone!
The person putting on the tape needs to be clear about what they want to achieve by taping. Whether it’s to support a sprained ankle and limit ankle movement, or improve the way someone moves and uses their muscles when exercising. The important thing is that when you are taped, your symptoms should feel better or you feel like your movement is more controlled.
With the London marathon this week, you’ll no doubt be seeing a rainbow of colours of tape out there. Tape isn’t a magical fix or cure but can be really effective at reducing pain and improving functional movement when we are out and about.
